Usurping Constitutional Right Of Freedom Of Press Amounts To Treason – Shehbaz
PMLN President and National Assembly Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif while paying rich tribute to Pakistani journalists, has said that freedom of the press is constitutional right usurping of which amounts to treason against the constitution.
In his statement on the World Journalism Day, Shehbaz said media is the fourth pillar of the state without which democracy is incomplete. He said media is the mirror of the society which helps the society to reform for the better. Anyone who makes the mistake of breaking this mirror to avoid looking at their ugly face makes the biggest mistake.
Shehbaz said journalists in Pakistan have laid down invaluable sacrifices and services for their right to freedom of expression. They braved torture, persecution, imprisonment, lashing, and even laid down their lives.
Today, Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman is facing the same persecution in this day and age of media freedom. His imprisonment has brought bad name to Pakistan in the entire international arena, he said.
The National Assembly Opposition Leader stressed that without a free media, a country cannot be truly democratic, and cannot progress.
