Khawaja Asif says army will protect state buildings; Dar says PM will dissolve assemblies if commission proves rigging.
ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Saturday said the law-enforcement agencies had to resort to teargas shelling as the PAT and PTI protestors wanted to occupy the Prime Minister’s House and parliament.
Talking to media persons during his visit to the Prime Minister House and parliament in the Red Zone after the protestors and the police clashed, he said a group of protesters broke their promise and tried to occupy the Prime Minister House and parliament.
Federal Minister for Finance Senator Ishaq Dar claimed that Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will dissolve the assemblies if the judicial commission proved rigging in the 2013 election.
Talking to a private TV channel, Dar said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had assured that there will be no violence in the Red Zone.
“The resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif or Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif is out of the question,” he said.
He said Dr Tahirul Qadri had asked his supporters to remove tents, creating a Muharram 9-like situation. “But we are still trying to resolve this issue amicably,” he added.
Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif said the army will protect the state buildings and could be asked to clear the area on Constitution Avenue.
In an interview to a private television channel, he said the prime minister will not resign as seeking his resignation was an insult to parliament and the Constitution of Pakistan. He said the mandate given by the people could not be surrendered to 10,000 to 20 000 people.
He said the government wanted to resolve the political issue through negotiations. “Nawaz Sharif is an elected prime minister,” he added. Asif said the government will use its constitutional and legal authority.
Javed Hashmi had reservations about the movement of the participants of the sit-ins towards the Prime Minister House, he added. Javed Hashmi is a veteran and experienced politician, he said, adding that the PTI and PAT did not want to resolve the issues through dialogue.
Ongoing turmoil to end in few days; few thousand people can’t hold govt’s mandate hostage; resignation not possible; all constitutional demands of PTI accepted; sit-in now a ‘sea of chairs’ only.
LAHORE: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said the PTI and PAT leadership was asking him to accept what was beyond his authority and added that the ongoing tumultuous situation would end within a few days.
Talking to a private TV channel, he said a few thousand people picketing outside the Parliament House could not hold hostage the mandate given by millions of people to the government.
“A few thousand people have gathered in Islamabad, asking the government, with a mandate of millions of people, to wind up, dissolve the assemblies and hold fresh elections. Is this not a step against democracy?”
Nawaz visited the residence of renowned journalist Mujeebur Rehman Shami to condole the death of his sister.
He said: “In a resolution, the opposition and the allied parties had committed not to tolerate any step against democracy.”
He was optimistic that this tumultuous situation would end within a few days. He said people were fed up with the sit-in, which was now only a sea of empty chairs.
He said the government had accepted all the demands of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) related to electoral reforms and also requested the Supreme Court to constitute a commission to probe the rigging allegations.
“Everything will be exposed before the public. We will respect any decision by the commission. Unfortunately, the situation has harmed the country’s development process and public prosperity. But InshaAllah it will be retrieved soon and the country will return to the path of development.”
The prime minister said the ongoing sit-ins of the PTI and PAT had affected public life and the national economy. He said the presidents of Maldives and Sri Lanka had already cancelled their visits to Pakistan.
He said the Chinese president was due in Pakistan and various power projects were being executed with Chinese cooperation, but this may also face impediments.
Nawaz said genuine demands, including democratic reforms and a commission on alleged poll rigging, had been fulfilled. “But they have been demanding my resignation, dissolution of the National Assembly and even the provincial assemblies which are not even within my purview,” he added.
He said it was strange that during his visit to Imran Khan’s residence in Bani Gala, everything had been discussed openly. He did not know why Imran Khan, Tahirul Qadri and other parties decided to march on Islamabad the same day.

LAHORE: Most of the PML-N stalwarts believed that Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri’s speech was aimed to create anarchy and civil disobedience in Pakistan like that in Egypt, Syria and Iraq and the government should not allow him at any cost to fulfill his agenda.
Some of them have cautioned that government still had the time to handle it politically and sensibly instead of further worsening the situation.
Talking with The News, PML-N Information Secretary Mushahidullah Khan claimed that Tahir-ul-Qadri was a lunatic person who had given license to his followers to kill anyone. He stated he had not seen any religious scholar in the world who was issuing injunctions of killing people to his workers.
He claimed that he had conveyed to his followers to kill Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif if anything happened to him. He had further conveyed them to kill cops if they stopped them. Mushahid alleged that he had not seen such revolutionary throughout history who was a coward and using shield of women for his personal protection. He further pointed out that the agenda of Qadri was nothing but just to create anarchy on the day which is symbolic of people’s solidarity.
He claimed that it was a gathering of cronies of former dictator Pervez Musharraf which include Sheikh Rasheed, Imran Khan, Chaudhry brothers and APML leadership. He plainly said the government would not let them create anarchy in Pakistan at any cost. He further said Imran would have to clarify his position as well because he was entering into alliance with a person who did not recognize the constitution.
Railways Minister Kh Saad Rafique said government admits Imran’s right of holding long march but Qadri had no such right and he would be dealt with iron hand. Former law minister Sanaullah Khan claimed that the entire speech of Tahir ul Qadri was aimed to mislead his followers and create anarchy in the country. He alleged that Qadri was blackmailing his male and female followers using the shield of religion to cause bloodshed.
He stated it was not politics but he was misleading his followers by misusing religions and the whole nation should take notice of it. He pointed out that Sufi Naik Muhammad was also doing the same thing and the government had to carry out operation against him in Swat.
He claimed that Sufi had delivered only one such speech while Qadri had delivered at least 10 speeches in which he had tried to instigate people to cause anarchy and bloodshed.
PML-N Senator Zafar Ali Shah termed the speech effective for containing political and religious elements which had impressed majority of people. He claimed that he had made announcement of joining Imran’s march which was being anticipated by the government. He admitted that the government did not take it seriously which was a grave mistake on its part. He claimed time was short but there was still room to handle it politically with sanity.
Senator Mohsin Leghari was of the view that he was worried about the future of the country as things were getting out of control of the government speedily. He alleged that parliament had become irrelevant after the PM was not attending its sessions and issues spilled on to the streets as a result. He claimed that the government did not try to handle the issue seriously and wasted much of the time and irresponsible statements from the ministers aggravated the situation. He attributed the ongoing overseeing situation to government failure in addressing the issues. (Courtesy: The News)
