He added that he wanted to return “city of lights” status to Karachi. The former prime minister said that the PML-N to form an alliance to contest election in the city. The former prime minister said that the PML-N to form an alliance to contest election in the city.  Nawaz said that free and fair election was necessary for the future of the country, adding that the chief election commission should give special focus to Karachi.

Power breakdown shows government’s inefficiency: Ahsan Iqbal

ISLAMABAD (Online): Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Deputy Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal said that the recent power breakdown in the country shows complete inefficiency of the government and the Prime Minister should resign for it.

Addressing a press conference, Ahsan Iqbal denied any links of his party with Lashkar-e-Janghi (LeJ) and alleged the PPP of having relationship with Lashkar-e-Janghi in 1997, 2008 and 2010 for their vested interests.

He pointed out that the incompetence, corruption and bad governance by the PPP had given millions of rupees losses to the country and the country was facing severe financial constraints.

He said that the government had ruined the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and future of thousands of PhDs students, studying abroad, has been put on stake.

While commenting on the PPP-MQM relation, Ahsan Iqbal said that there was no such serious issue between the two parties but they were just playing with the sentiments of the people and at a time when only few days have been left in completion of the tenure MQM resorted to sit on the opposition benches.

Answering to a question Ahsan Iqbal said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is not in a position to face the nation as during their recent tenure they failed to control price hike, energy crisis and maintain peace in the country.

The Deputy Secretary General said that sovereignty of the country had not been maintained and drones are continued to targeting the innocent people of the country.

He said if to remove financial constraints and to make the country prosperous we would have to save the economy first and we would be able to draw the masses out of the difficulties.

He said that various conspiracies had been hatched by the government and their allies to weaken the support of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) in the upcoming general election.

To another question about the security, he said the provinces alone could not control the menace of terrorism in country because the electronic surveillance system was only with the federal government, adding that Pakistan People party had always made nexus with the terrorists although the PML-N were alleged in order to hide their own failure.

Talking about the right to vote of the Overseas Pakistanis, Ahsan Iqbal said that PML-N had always talked in the favour of the vote rights of the Pakistanis living abroad but the government had not come out with the pragmatic and practical solution.

PML-N cobbles electoral alliance with PML-F, NPP

JI also agrees to join alliance; Pir Pagara says Sindh will be PPP’s real battleground; Nawaz welcomes army chief’s assurance of fair polls, smooth transfer of power

KARACHI: A three-party electoral alliance has been forged against the ruling PPP which would contest the upcoming general election from one platform.

Pakistan Muslim League-Functional and National People’s Party, which parted ways with the ruling PPP, entered into an electoral alliance with the PML-N here on Tuesday. The three parties reached the agreement during a meeting between Nawaz Sharif and the spiritual leader of Hurs and Chief of PML-F Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashdi at the Kingri House here.

Significantly, two former governors of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto era Ghulam Mustafa Khar of the Punjab and Mumtaz Ali Bhutto of Sindh as well as former chief ministers of the two provinces were present in the meeting.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, former Sindh chief ministers Ghous Ali Shah and Liaquat Ali Jatoi, and Saleem Zia assisted Nawaz Sharif during the meeting. PML-F President Pir Sadruddin Shah Rashdi, former governor Punjab Ghulam Mustafa Khar, former federal minister

Mohammed Ali Durrani, Jam Madad Ali, Nusrat Sehar Abbasi, former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, former federal Minister Ghous Bux Mehar, and Member Sindh Assembly Sheharyar Khan Mehar assisted Pagara.

Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi, President National People’s Party, and MPA Sindh Assembly Masroor Jatoi of NPP were also part of the meeting.Speaking in a joint press conference, Pir Pagara in a strong worded tone said the PPP would wipe out from the three provinces and Sindh would be its battleground, as it will have to face the newly formed alliance comprising many heavyweights.

The PPP, he said, wanted to win the elections by hook or by crook adding that his alliance with Nawaz Sharif was in the national interest. He said if the PML-F had any lust for power, they would not have ended their alliance with the PPP.

He alleged that pre-planned rigging had begun and the MQM’s separation from the PPP-led coalition government was an obvious proof of it, as the interim set up would be constituted with its consensus to elect the person of its own choice.

He said there would be one-to-one election between the PPP and their three-party alliance. The Pir Pagara said his late father desired to see all Muslim Leagues united at one platform and in this connection he had last contacted Nawaz Sharif and discussed about the possible unification, which was also endorsed by Sharif.

He asked the chief Justice and army chief to hold an inquiry by a tribunal into the sudden countrywide power blackout, panicking the nation. He asked if it was a message conveyed to the nation or was it really a technical fault. He said ‘Takht-e-Lahore and Takht-e-Punjab were with him and he would surely inflict a massive defeat on the PPP and its allies in the upcoming general election.

Nawaz Sharif said all the three parties had agreed to cooperate in the election and efforts will be made to rope in other opposition parties including the nationalist parties — possibly posing a credible threat to the PPP in its traditional stronghold.

He said Karachi was being hostage by certain mafias and the Supreme Court had also said that militant wings were working in the city but there was no crackdown on them.“We have discussed the caretaker setup and agreed that all parties must be consulted before the appointment of interim government,” Nawaz said, adding that in case of failure to evolve a consensus, the decision of the majority would be accepted in line with the democratic norms. He was confident that the country would see a fair and transparent electoral exercise soon.

The meeting also hoped that the chief election commissioner would adopt an effective monitoring system for free, fair and transparent election.Answering a question about the allegation that the PML N was patronizing terrorist organizations, he tauntingly said the PPP will one day accuse him of carrying out all terrorist activities in the country.

“Let them say; time will prove who are behind such activities.”Asked as to why he did not take notice of Karachi which had been burning for the last five years, Nawaz said one needed courage to fight with Zardari and ‘we would surely force him to surrender one day’.

Nawaz said it had been decided in principle that the caretaker setup would be challenged in a superior court if the PPP and MQM tried to impose it on the nation without consulting the opposition parties.

He said the PPP and MQM were still coalition partners and were planning a massive rigging in the upcoming general election. He said both the parties were staging a drama and trying to misguide the people of Sindh. He said the drama of the two parties would be exposed in the coming few days, as the masses had realized that the ruling parties wanted to come into power again.

Nawaz Sharif said the resignations of MQM ministers and governor Sindh was just a drama and it was a preplanned script. He said the Governor Sindh left abroad and acting governor, who was also a PPP leader, signed the bill.

Nawaz Sharif, who also visited the residence of late Prof Ghafoor Ahmed for condolences, told media persons that Jamaat-e-Islami had also agreed to join the grand opposition alliance, while the JUI-F had already entered into an alliance with the PML-N.

Nawaz also welcomed Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani’s assurance of free and fair polls and smooth transfer of power and said now was the time for end to negative politics.

He said the rulers tried to delay the election and used Imran Khan and a religious leader returned from Canada but all their plans were foiled.

He declared that there would be a big question mark on the credibility of the ECP if election was not held in a free and fair manner.

The PML-N chief also visited the former speaker National Assembly Illahi Bux Soomro and offered condolences on the death of his son.

Responding to a question, Nawaz said negotiations with the Taliban were necessary if the nation wanted to see the rule of peace in the country.

With regard to the postponement of polls, he said nobody could dare postpone the election. God forbid, if it happened, the country would plunge into chaos,” he feared.

He said committees had been formed, comprising members of all the three political parties, to solve issues and reach a consensus within the next week.

Nawaz said they wanted to change the system in Sindh and demanded that a governor appointed on political basis should be removed. He read out the different points which were agreed to mutually.

On the Karachi situation, he said it had been held hostage and no action was taken on the Supreme Court’s order against the militant wings of political parties.

“Had action been taken, Shahzeb would not have been murdered.” On the question of an alliance with the Awami National Party proposed by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, he said it was a good sign and ‘we want peace in the tribal areas and Karachi’.

ECP moves to check PM’s spending on his home constituency

Takes notice of CDWP, Planning Commission approvals

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken strong notice of the approval by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) last week of schemes worth billion of rupees including the prime minister’s controversial Gujar Khan Package, it is learnt.

ECP’s secretary Ishtiaq Khan, when asked if ECP has taken notice of last week’s CDWP meeting conducted by Planning Commission to approve projects worth Rs72 billion including revised cost of projects falling under Gujar Khan Package, replied through an SMS by stating: “we did and they have sent a detailed reply”.

In its reply, the Planning Commission argued that they conducted the CDWP meeting to approve development projects as a routine and to meet some international obligations.“We have not diverted any funds so this CDWP meeting cannot be attributed as committing any violation of orders imposed by the ECP,” the official sources said quoting the communication sent out by the Planning Commission bearing signature of its secretary Hassan Nawaz Tarar to the ECP.

On projects related to PM’s Package, the Planning Commission stated that these projects were already been approved but were tabled again before the CDWP because of revised costs. On the development projects of federal minister for Kashmir affairs and PPP’s Punjab president Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, the Planning Commission said that all schemes related to his constituency were deferred.

The News had reported on February 22, 2013 about approval of multi-billion rupees projects after which the ECP member took strong exception and inquired from the PC why the schemes were approved despite imposition of ban.

This scribe made several attempts to get version of the Planning and Development Division but its senior officials were reluctant to talk on the subject. One of them promised to get back after checking facts but did not.

On February 21, 2013, the government approved ‘politically motivated’ development projects worth billions of rupees including controversial road projects for Prime Minister’s Gujar Khan Package with upward revised costs.

The sources said that on the one side the revision of cost of road projects was under way and, on the other, construction work was already in progress to complete the task before completion of government’s tenure.

The schemes which the PC claimed to have deferred for Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo included construction of carpeted road from Depalpur to Head Sulemanki through Havely Lakha (45km) at an estimated cost of Rs1.416 billion, metalled road (carpeted) from Depalpur to Baseerpur (25km) at an estimated cost of Rs850 million and construction of inter-district metalled road starting from Jamber to Sulemanki Head Works, covering five districts, i.e. Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Bhawalnagar and Bahawalpur at an estimated cost of Rs5.115 billion under which Jamber to Rajowal road will be constructed in Phase-1, Rajowal to Amira Tajey Ka in Phase-II and Amira Takey Ka to Sulemanki in phase-III.

The Planning Commission had claimed after the CDWP meeting that a total of 22 development projects were considered during the meeting related to one project of water resources, 9 projects of transport and communication, 3 science and technology, 4 health, 1 energy, 1 physical housing, 2 information technology and 1 project of HEC. The CDWP approved 11 projects costing Rs6.45 billion subject to cost rationalisation and recommended four projects at the cost of Rs15.8 billion for consideration of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC). Seven projects were deferred for further scrutiny.
